I am a descendant of a William Braswell (ca1680-ca1720; wife Mary ___ who remarried Moses Ginn after his death). He is believed to be the grandson of Rev. Robert Braswell. The problem is that I have seen him represented as a son of both Richard and Robert (sons of the Rev.) in different sources. I have also found sources not listing him as a son of either. The facts I have seen would seem to support him being a son of Richard and wife Sarah Sampson, but I would like to know what others think. His wife had remarried before Richard's death (so it's assumed William died before his father) and therefore he is not listed in the will among Richard's other children. I would appreciate input from other descendants/researchers who may have more on this than I have seen. Thanks, Tim Wilson From ???@??? Another GEDCOM shows the same families producing William Braswell (Jr) (1730-1770 Nash Co, NC). I assume that is who you all are writing of? I have a negative photostat that I got at Raleigh. On the back it is stamped "Photostatic copy by Dept. of Archives & History Raleigh, North Carolina Jan 7 1972 from the records in its archives". Someone typed on it "From: Cumberland Co. wills, 1757-1869. William Carver, 1766." I will type it up & put it on the web. If anyone has it already on the web, please let me know immediately. My photostat is from the loose will (i.e. from the packet) I suppose. It is manuscript. It is not from the manuscript (original) will book. It is signed "William Carver==", so William could write his name. That is, there is no X. Maybe later something will come to light as why someone thought his wife's maiden name was Wilson. I suppose that it was deduced (by elimination or associations) rather than induced from a single document, for if it were inductive reasoned, we'd all have heard of the document. As to Wilson in gedcom. What do you all do when you have a questionable surname like "(Wilson?)"? I think it should have been entered as Wilson? in parentheses, but that would make it alphabetized with names beginning with parentheses. Some programs might have ignored the parentheses. I seem to recall parentheses being ignored from the early 1990s when I was inputting & printing. Maybe we should not input what we do not know or what we question. In 1990 or 1991 I input in BK "Thomas Sr. or John Woodward" m. "Elizabeth or Mary Simpson" b."abt 1710". On the pedigree on the screen he appears as "Thomas Sr. or Woodward". :-( My point is we know how hard it is to put a square peg in a round hole -- our data does not always fit well in the fields but leaving it only in notes means it does not print on most output. So, I can understand Wilson getting input into someone's genealogy program. I see that I input the man under consideration as "William Carver (alias Braswell)". He appears on the screen in BK on the pedigree as "William Carver Braswell)". Obviously not desirable. He can be found in BK as William Braswell since BK looks at the first 5 letters of 1st & last name and for the same reason cannot be found as William Carver. :( BTW, I did not give Mary a surname in my BK input. I had her on my pedigree of Mar 6 1978 as "Mary (Wilson?)". I have not retyped my pedigree since then. I just make a few notes on it as needed. You can find it from THE Braswell Pages that our owner/webmaster Keith does or go direct to http://emcee.com/~green. I have translated fs to ss. I assume that is what is desired? I have kept the carriage returns of the original. I hope you all do not have to scroll right to see the end of each line. In using Internet Explorer one can reduce the font size if it does not fit on your screen. I bet you can do the same with Netscape. I am not sure how it acts in frames (as Keith has it). The part I have on the web is the religious part. You all know -- he part where it talks of God. Is that the testament? Is that why a will is called a Last Will & Testament? Why do modern wills leave this out? The S.Bapt. Church has a program to help people write their will. The help they give excludes the religious part. In other words the Baptist help one write a fine will for atheists. Why? As an atheist, I expect more of Christians. Is the old wording now illegal? Maybe that is why I sign my letters CSA rather than USA to distance myself from the crumbling decay. Now I have said enough to get flamed. -- James W. Green III of Winnsboro SC CSA From ???@??? Bill Hunt is my cousin in St. Louis and I recognize those other references, but unfortunately none of those sources we've provided identifies Wilson as the surname of Mary, wife of William. Unfortunately it isn't clear whether this William who married Mary (perhaps a Wilson) was the son of Robert or Richard. Richard's wife is said to be a Sampson (another item I can't verify) and if true, I would favor Richard as the father of William who married Mary because the surname Sampson was used as a given name by descendants. I think I had other reasons for favoring Richard, but I can't recall what they were right now. Some researchers also believe that Mary's surname was Wood, but again there was no proof. In some cases, perhaps theories of some researchers are being reported as fact? -Nona ---------- > From: FoyBrasw@aol.com > To: Braswell-L@genealogy.org > Cc: rof@backporch.com > Subject: Mary Wilson > Date: Thursday, January 16, 1997 2:54 AM > > My source for Mary Wilson, is some GEDCOM files I downloaded in Nov. 95 when > I was trying to unscramble the William Braswells. > > One cites William Braswell/Mary Wilson having son William Jr. who married > Margaret Unknown and bore Jacob (1738-1823 NC). Do you have Francis Albritton or Albrighton Jones in your family tree? His middle name always appears in records but the middle name is spelled various ways. Now to respond to your question. In my notes I show that Richard Braswell received 400 acres of land from his father on 16 Jan. 1660 and I have the following information about the land holdings of his father, Robert Braswell: Dr. R. B. Braswell states in his book (Following the Braswells in America 1600-1983) that Robert owned a plantation on Blackwater River as early as 10 Nov. 1635 but he doesn't cite his source (it was probably Boddie though). Viola Vick Braswell says in her book (The Lineage of Jacob Thomas Braswell) that the earliest Virginia record she found for Robert was 29 Apr. 1650. I haven't been able to find that earlier record mentioned by Dr. Braswell and by John Bennett Boddie either. Viola Braswell did cite her sources and the record in 1650 appears in Deed Book 1 page 426 Isle of Wight Co. In Will and Adm Bk A pp. 32-33 Capt. John Upton mentioned 300 acres of land he had sold to Mr. Robert Bracewell. (The use of "Mr." signified that Robert Bracewell was a man of status.) Robert Braswell's pastorate was Lawne's Creek Parish which was located in the area of the present boundary line between Surry and Isle of Wight Co. He resided on Blackwater River which was a few miles south of the James River and the colonial town Jamestown (a few miles northwest of the present-day town of Smithfield, Virginia). At his death, Robert Braswell owned 700 acres which included his home and plantation and 600 acres on Nansemond River. Also in my notes is a mention of Arthur Jones, Jno. Pitt and Thos. Pitt who were witnesses to one of Richard's land transactions in Nansemond Co. Richard was in Chowan Pct., NC by 1725. Thanks so much for administering this list and allowing us to communicate with each other. I have a color brochure from St. Luke's Church in Smithfield, Virginia which is the same building used by our ancestor Rev. Robert Bracewell. I can't find any copyright symbols anywhere so I think we could safely use it on the Web. Our scanner is attached to my husband's Power Mac so I'll have to ask him to scan it and send it to you. I'm wondering if we should scan each photo separately or just do two scans, the front and back? The text is also interesting and the files are likely to be really large. For those who want to vacation in Virginia and visit the ancestral lands, you can find the church near Smithfield, Virginia on Route 10. Their mailing address is RR 4, Box 220, Smithfield, VA 23430, phone 804-357-3367. Two of my cousins picked up a brochure for me while visiting there. Perhaps if you all sent SASEs to them, they would send each of you a brochure of your own? In one of my newsletters I published a report from Bill Hunt (my cousin) who visited the church a few years ago. -Nona From ???@??? I don't know if the newsletter is still active. There were items about all spelling variations but Braswell played a minor part. There was however a lot of historical info about the Bracewells in England, Rev. Robert, Isle of Wight, and LATER-DAY BRACEWELLS IMMIGRATING to US via boat through 1827. From ???@??? I just got back from a trip to the National Archive - Southwest at Ft. Worth. One William (wife Lucinda) was William Blackstock Braswell, the son of William Barjonah ("Jonas") Braswell. Lucinda L. was his second wife. The other William (wife Mary) was his son. Both Williams were in the Caldwell Co. census in 1850/60/70. In 1850/60, they were in Collettsville TWP and Lenoir in 1870. I also have the info on their children at the time. From ???@??? I sent you a note that I had found out who the two Williams were. William Barjonah ("Jonas") Braswell had 3 sons - William Blackstock, Rion (Ryan) and Wiley (various spellings). "Jonas" also had 2 daughters: Nancy married James Barber. I have their children, etc. The other daughter was only known as "Big Suzie." Nothing is known about her. My ggf was William Jackson Braswell born 22 March 1835 and married to Louisa Allison of Johnson Co, TN. William Blackstock had a son named William born ca 1833 but he married Mary Clark of Caldwell Co, NC. Wiley had a William named William Hulden born 1823 who married Sophronia E. Clark. And believe it or not, James Barber/Nancy Braswell had a William. Their children even had Williams but we won't go into that. Rion (Ryan) had a William born ca 1834 and my records don't have the name of his wife. I think that William is my ggf William Jackson. You know how census birthdays are - plus or minus a year. The date and location fits. I am joining the Caldwell Co. Genealogical Society and sending in a copy of my tree. The curse of Williams continues. My grandfather had a son William Ira who had a Jr. He had a brother named William Wiley who had a Jr. He had a brother named Joseph who had a son named William. Enough already! I don't know how long you've been wasting your time and energy with genealogy, so forgive me if I tell you things you already know. It's generally considered that most of the above names are variations of Bracewell/Braswell and that most (or at least a whole bunch of us) descend from the Rev. Robert Bracewell/Braswell who came to VA in the 1600's. I think it would probably be worth your while to get in touch with Keith Braswell at: Braswell-L@genealogy.org And ask him to add you to the roster. It looks great on your web site. I do need to do something about the newsletter too. I'd like to send you the first one if you'd like to put it up on your web site? I need to look at it, but as I recall, I summarized what I knew about the early Bracewells in Isle of Wight County and it would be useful to people new to family research. It's archived on a disk somewhere so I need to find it and then I could email it to you. It consisted of 15 printed pages (includes a name index). Would that size be appropriate for the space you have? It doesn't have any graphics. Should I send the text as an email message or attach it as a Word for Windows document? I'm sorry about being so slow to accomplish things. It gets so hectic around here some times. -Nona ---------- > From: Keith Braswell > To: rof@backporch.com > Subject: Re: Rev.
