I would hope that many will follow in your footsteps and visit the Tidewater home of our ancestors and particularly St. Luke's Church, Smithfield, where our Immigrant Ancestor preached. It is truly a spiritual experience, isn't it? As to Viola Vick Braswell's book, "The Lineage of James Craig Braswell", I must tell you that, while well-intentioned, it has caused almost as many groans and gnashings of teeth among us older generation of Braswell researchers as John Bennett Bodie's shocking liberties with the Truth in "Southside Virginia Families". For instance, it is probably the source of that canard that Rev. ROBERT BRACEWELL's wife was named "Rebecca". In fact, we don't know his wife--or wives' name(s). It is has been SPECULATED by some that REBECCA IZARD--with whom the Reverend intrusted the care of his minor children in his will--may have been ROBERT's sister {which would have meant ANN BRACEWELL married her first cousin, JAMES BAGNALL, a whole nother matter} but there is no evidence to support the allegation that his wife's name was "Rebecca". It may well have been--he named his second daughter REBECCA--but we simply just don't know. Worse, Viola had her husband descending from an illegitimate lineage--that of SUSANNAH BURGESS BRACEWELL, mistress to ROBERT TOWLE(Y)--when in fact he evidently evolved from RICHARD and SARAH VALENTINE(?) BRACEWELL whose legitimate descendants, alone, populated colonial North Carolina. First among these was your WILLIAM BRASWELL (c.1676-1720), who must have been a heroic figure to our early family since every branch of it seemed obliged to name at least one son in his honor. Not to seem excessively picky, but Viola estimated WILLIAM's birth at 1680 when in fact his appearance in extant colonial records would push that back by about four years to c.1676. My Dad is just waiting for that window in time to leave us. He sleeps all the time like a baby and is conscious of very little. He will probably make his transition any day now. Another sad note: I found out in a letter from Eunice yesterday that our old research buddy, Pal Spencer, has cancer. That explains why she hasn't answered my letter yet. Eunice said she didn't get a Christmas card from her this year, either--probably for the same reason. The only other Mormon (besides Eunice) in my old circle is Lucy Haycock, daughter of the late Jessie R. Wadley of Pleasant Grove, Utah, whom I am debating about contacting. Jessie was my oldest correspondant and a dogged researcher. Her daughter took up the work following her Mom's death but I have no idea if she's still interested in the Braswells. As you predicted, Eunice is up to "here" in other research--French parish records of all things--and probably won't get reinvolved with the Braswell research except to share what she has already collected. I plan to offer to edit some of her materials, her English research particularly. Naturally I will share with everybody. I may have to edit something for the Virginia Magazine of History and Genealogy first before releasing it all to the two Braswell Websites. We are lucky that Eunice is still alive and active in genealogy. I was touched when she wrote that "The years we all worked so hard on the BRASWELLs were the greatest years of my life. What fond memories your letter brought!" She also spoke highly of you, and she had kind words to say about Nona and her "Braswell Branches" but regretted that her commitments to paying clients wouldn't allow her to accept Nona's invitation to contribute a quarterly column to "BB". Eunice, in her characteristic brutal honesty, had less kind words to say about Dr Roy B. Braswell and O. Klute Braswell {in re my description of the errors that had crept into contemporary Braswell research}: "...there is so much BRASWELL garbage out there, each one giving a different ancestry for the same branch of the family. Roy's data is very bad, and Klute's isn't much better. He stopped answering me long ago." The poor dear invested $2700 in a computer setup some years ago but not even her computer-wizard son {a Novell R&D guy} can get the thing to run so I guess we'll have to be her interface with the Net. Sorry Gus is having such a tough time of it. Pets are just like children, aren't they? Sometimes even better! E U later! Carey From ???@??? The proof that you gave that WILLIAM's first wife was KATHERINE LISTER--i.e. the written testimony of WILLIAM's grandson--is conclusive. Indeed. as you say, a grandson would know his own grandparents. That constitutes Primary Evidence in anyone's book, and I am therefore entering her in my Family Tree Maker as his first wife. That he and KATHERINE were married in 1785 also seems right, given that WILLIAM was shown with a wife but no kids yet on the 1790 Federal Census of Greenville County, South Carolina. I checked my records for both Greenville and Wilkes County, North Carolina (where WILLIAM's family lived before moving to South Carolina in 1787 but found no LISTERs in close association with the BRASWELLs, either in legal or Baptist records. It will be up to the more curious of WILLIAM's genealogist descendants to trace that connection! Here is what I have on WILLIAM prior to his removal from Fulton County, Illinois, after the fall harvest in 1830. Feel free to ask for citations of any of it: 1. Federal Census of 1790, Greenville District. Listed as WILLIAM "BRASHERES(?)" (poor legibility) next to his older brother, RICHARD (my ggg-grandfather), with 1 white male 16 & over, 1 white female. 2. c. 1799. WILLIAM among the signers of a petition to divide Knox County, Tennessee (to form Anderson). 3. Sept. 12, 1803. WILLIAM co-signed an $800 bond with AUGUSTIN HACKWORTH in Anderson County for his brother, ROBERT, to be administrator of the estate of JAMES BUTLER, deceased. BUTLER's widow, ELIZABETH, was their sister. 4. June 10, 1807. WILLIAM "BRAZEL'" sold JOHN SUTHERLAND (both of Anderson County) 100 acres of land in said county (on Wolf Creek, a tributary of Clinch River, near the present AEC plant). He also sold him Lot #39 in the town of Burrville (renamed "Clinton" after the Burr Conspiracy) which "said lot was willed to WILLIAM BRAZLE." It is believed that WILLIAM inherited the lot from his late father, RICHARD, Sr., who died not long after moving to Tennessee c. 1800. These data are from Minutes that survived a fire that burned the early deed and probate records. 5. WILLIAM may have stopped off in White County, Tennessee, on his way to Illinois Territory to stay with his brothers JOHN & RICHARD, and other kinsmen there. SOLOMON TABOR, who later became father-in-law to WILLIAM's son SIMON, witnessed the sale of RICHARD BRAZIL's 100 acre tract "lying in White County in the third District, on the north side of Calf killers fork of the Caney fork" on May 4, 1811. (The sale was through RICHARD's "attorney", SAMUEL USSERY. RICHARD had left for "the Mississippi Territory" (Johnson County, Illinois) after the crops were laid by in the Fall of 1809. Then we have the enigmatic notation that WILLIAM BRAZEL's name was on "A List of letters remaining in the post office at Sparta, Tenn., on June 30, 1829, which if not taken out before the 1st day of Oct. next will be sent to the general post office as dead letters." This supports your JOSHUA CHILTON's statement {in his War of 1812 Bounty Land application} that he married WILLIAM's daughter, NANCY, in Jackson County, Tennessee, September 1, 1825: WILLIAM had relatives in both White County (the USSERYs) and Jackson County ( his brother, JOHN BRASWELL's family) and our "Billy" had a pattern of living with relatives. I know that I, as well as your fellow descendants of WILLIAM BRASWELL would be very interested in those Tennesee records you have that show your CHILTONs in proximity to WILLIAM and others from the old Greenville/Anderson/White county gang. 6. I assume that you have all the St. Clair/Madison county records that pertain to WILLIAM, i.e. the reference in Reynold's "Pioneer History of Illinois" stating that the "CHILTONs, BRASELL (RIchard or William?Ed.) {actually it was ROBERT, VALENTINE & WILLIAM} who pioneered the Goshen Settlement near Edwardsville before 1810. I have W.W. Sweet's "Religion on the American Frontier", Vol. 1, The Baptists, 1783-1830, which show WILLIAM active in the "Looking Glass Prarie" Church starting on June 17, 1809, when he and his brothers ROBERT & VALENTINE were Messengers to the Associational Meeting held at the Silver Creek Meeting House. WILLIAM makes regular appearances in these church records until October, 1819, when the records become scanty. We know that he was still around Madison County until May 8, 1821, when his daughter JANE ("Jenny") married OLIVER BROCK. 7. I further assume that a researcher of your long experience--which even predates mine!--would have already researched the Federal platbooks for land transactions in Illinois, right? That would include the record of October 28, 1822, in which ROBERT BRAZLE sold his title to NE1/4 of Sec. 31, 3N 6W to THOMAS CHILTON, who in turn sold it to Farrar & Townsend, who, on March 15, 1825, paid off the balance due the Government--$182.12--and were issued Final Certificate #689 dated October 31, 1825 (Vol. 95, p. 17). Unrelated, but it's interesting that both ROBERT and WILLIAM had daughters named ISABELLE, the former who married WILLIAM STEEL iin Madison County August 9, 1822. 8. Likewise I'm sure you have the Federal Census of 1820 for St. Clair County showing WILLIAM BRAZEL in Chambers Township with 2 males under 10, himself "45 & upwards" and females 2 10-15, 2 16-25, and wife, 26-44. This doubtlessly reflects his "second family" by ELIZABETH MEDFORD. Note that OLIVER BROCK was only four families away (and not yet a widower) with 2 boys 10-15, himself 26-44, and a daughter under 15, and his first wife, 26-44. 9. WILLIAM must have doubled back to Middle Tennessee in the mid-1820's, then returned to his place in Chambers Township just in time to lose it to the Sheriff in that libel case he lost on July 14, 1828. After that he accompanied his son-in-law OLIVER BROCK up to Fulton County (near Peoria). OLIVER BROCK entered his livestock mark in Fulton on December 8, 1828. WILLIAM & OLIVER settled in Lewiston Township next to MOSES BRAZIL (my gg-grandfather who had been there since the Spring of 1825) WILLIAM bought an 80-acre tract of his own from ELIJAH WENTWORTH on October 15, 1829 (E1/2 of SE 1/4 of Sec. 2, 5N 3E. Fulton DB 2, p, 32, #841, WENTWORTH to BRASIL). 10. The Summer of 1830 saw these changes in the Fulton County clan: VALENTINE "BRAZLE" moved there by June where he appears on the Federal Census with 2nd wife, NANCY JOURNEY, in her 40's, with their small son age 5-9 and young daughters, 1 5-9, 2 10-14. These are the ones in the listing that you sent. VAL was actually in his 60's although his age was given as 50-59. MOSES was left out of the Census alltogether, and WILLIAM was also shown in his 50's but was in fact passed 60 also. He was also mysteriously shown with a girl under 5, 2 in their 20's, and no wife. A very sloppy job of enumeration!. 11. WILLIAM ran unsuccessfully for Fulton County Commissioner in the election held August 2, 1830. Then on September 30, he and MOSES sold their farms and headed South. VALENTINE stayed in Fulton until February 18, 1837, when he, too, sold out and moved to JoDaviess County (near your bunch in Green County, Wisconsin) where he expired on November 27, 1848, aged 83. WILLIAM travelled with his son-in-law, OLIVER BROCK, to Newton County, Missouri, where BROCK penned his will June 10, 1859, leaving behind a large family. WILLIAM journeyed on into Arkansas--first Benton, then Carroll County, where he expired about 1855. 12. You probably also have the same records on Green County, Wisconsin, but here is a summary just in case: (a) the 1884 "History of Green County" mentioning the CHILTONs at Gratiots Grove (1827) and the appearance of WILLIAM "BRAZZEL" (Jr.) in 1837, the second settler into Adams Township, obviously in the company of his sister, your gg-grandmother, evidently all up from Sangamon County. The ROBERT BRAZEL who accompanied them was ROBERT (Jr.), part of the old Goshen Settlement gang, the same with RICHARD. Naturally I have the Federal Census returns for these Green County folks as well. I suppose you have the 1850 Mortality Schedule showing that JAMES CHILTON, 49, Virginia-born, died in May, 1850, of "Fever"? There are several corrections to your listing of the children of RICHARD BRASWELL (c.1723-c.1800) that I will offer in another letter. It is just like old times again, isn't it? And thanks for the picture of your lovely new home in Sandy. I'm including a snapshot of me and my 101-year old Dad so's you can tell whether Time has been kind to me or not! My, you have been busy! French parish records yet! I took two years of modern French at the University of Texas but I doubt it would be of much use to you in decipering that Gothic stuff. I know what you mean about the computer technology being frustrating; I didn't go online myself until near the end of last year, and not without some difficulty: the technological gobbledegook was bad enough, but was made worse by the impatient, haughty attitude of some of those to whom I turned for help: the world, including the world of genealogical correspondance, is not nearly so friendly and patient as it was when we first got started at this, is it my old friend? You know, if I were still capable of jealousy, I'd be jealous of your access to all those genealogical resources there in Sandy---THE Library, and all those genealogical experts. I was impressed to see that you have continued to grow yourself as an authority in several areas and on several lines (besides Braswell). I am really very proud of you, Eunice, as I hope you are of yourself. You kept at it, through thick and thin, growing all the while. I was so sorry to hear about Pal's cancer. That explains why she hasn't answered my letter yet. I sent her a getwell card and may call her if I don't hear soon. I can't believe she's still at that same address in Sioux Falls! Of course Bill Fields is still at "The Meadows" plantation....they'll have to carry him out feet first from there some day, hopefully not too soon (although Bill is pushing 90!). Is Lucy Haycock still active in genealogy and the Braswell research? Don't tell me she, too, is still at the same address? {Wondering whether we're the only ones whose world has turned upside down during the past 20 years} It was kind of you to acknowledge Bill and I and Pal as "the greatest BRASWELL researchers"; don't forget to include yourself in that number. It's easy to see that Gayle Braswell Ellison understudied with you: she has your same aggressive, enthusiastic style of research. She's positively obsessed with finding the progenitors of her BOARDVINE! He's looking more and more like a scion of the Northampton County (WILLIAM's, d.1720) Gang, although the picture is complicated by having some of our RICHARD & OBEDIENCE's outfit in the west end of that county (Surry) at the same time. Gayle shared your findings on the Wilkes families, which has been a great help. She will make a good researcher if I can ever break her of the habit of trying to turn people with similar names (e.g. BASIL) into BRASWELLs! Are you having doubts about the lineage of your JOHN & REBECCA PRUITT BRASWELL? I thought that was as close to proved as we can get! (Rev. ROBERT-RICHARD-VALENTINE-RICHARD-JOHN). Granted, the only lineages that can be proved LEGALLY are those through RICHARD I and RICHARD II (because they left wills and the BRASWELL-CARVER records that name the relationships) but we have enough circumstantial evidence from Edgecombe and Orange to make our case, as well. Lord knows we sweated enough years to work that one out, Cuz; let's don't throw it away now! Speaking of years of sweat, my greatest satisfaction so far in this research since getting reinoculated with "The Braswell Bug" was to help a young cousin (Lucy Baron, a Harvard librarian whose mother was a Braswell) establish her connection with your JOHN's family in Jackson/Smith County, Tennessee. Since she was a teenager, she had been trying to make the connection to that Nash bunch in Smith County but it just wasn't adding up. {She descends from your ROBIN BRASWELL, and was trying to hook up with that poor Nash ROBIN whose CALLEY caused such a scandal with her Black paramour}. Needless to say, your research on Jackson/Smith was crucial to the solution. And speaking of research, I'd be happy to edit your English Bracewell materials for publication in the "Virginia Magazine of History and Genealogy" or whereever. You know I can write respectibly in proper scholarly style when I chose to . I can't wait to see what you turned up in England. That research was ongoing when my life started falling apart in '74, and I lost interest in everything but raw survival. I'll send you a check for $50 or whatever you say to defray copying and mailing costs. After publication, I'm sure you wouldn't mind if I shared it with contemporary Braswell researchers, would you? As to the main body of your Braswell file, I would be pleased to come out to Sandy and edit them in person, or whatever arrangement that would be suitable to you. We need to share all our years of "sweat, tears, and laughter" with the present generation before we become ancestors ourselves, don't we? About OBEDIENCE's maiden name Yes, I came to the same dead end as you on that one. Like you, I did note with interest the presence of HENRY SNOW in Wilkes but obviously that didn't amount to any substantial evidence. The only reason I keep putting SNOW(?) after her name is the family tradition from my Aunt Laura Brazil (1869-1953) that the maiden names of her gg- amd ggg-grandmothers, taken together. made "SNOW WHITE", and she was right about the WHITE. With ANN we come to the last of our RICHARD BRACEWELL’s siblings. Her brief three decades of life will be chronicled below. Like her sister, REBECCA WEST, ANN remained in the tidewater area of Isle of Wight County while our RICHARD and his sister JANE’s families moved first to Nansemond and then back to the Blackwater Swamp Community on the Nottoway River in the southwestern end of the county. The extant documents {including the Will of RICHARD BRACEWELL, 1725} pertaining to this latter topic (“The Blackwater Swamp Community, 1695-1725”) will be the subject of Doc10. The two remaining topics are “JOHN BRACEWELL, b.c. 1688” (Doc11) and and the “Grandsons of RICHARD BRACEWELL, c. 1652-1725”(Doc12). Except where noted, the following summation was drawn from John Be. Boddie’s “Seventeenth Century Isle of Wight County. Virginia”: ROGER BAGNALL, father of JAMES BAGNALL, ANN’s husband, was one of 33 persons transported from England by Capt. JOHN UPTON by July 7, 1635. Capt. UPTON received a patent for 1650 acres on Pagan Point Creek, Isle of Wight County, for this service. Far from being an indentured servant, BAGNALL showed his social rank by himself receiving 700 acres in two patents on Pagan Point Creek from the Crown that same year (1635). Conclusive proof of his “Gentlemen” status may be seen in the fact that ROGER BAGNALL represented Isle of Wight County in the Virginia House of Burgesses for 1646. The following year, on Ocrtober 19, 1647, ROGER made his will naming wife REBECCA BAGNALL: “To wife all goods and household stuff, corn, tobacco, hoggs, land, and plantation until my son JAMES BAGNALL shall be a lawful heir; to JAMES BAGNALL, when of age, the plantation I live on.” BAGNALL also left to each of his children “a yearling heifer to run for their own use which shall be in the year 1649...” His other children were “ REBECCA, MARTHA (who married WALTER RUTTER, and then THOMAS ALLEN, Sr., and probably the SAMUEL BAGNALL who appears in the records in 1673. . .” (Bodie., Ibid.) Rev. ROBERT BRACEWELL’s will of February 15, 1667/8 mentions ANN last among his children and further shows her to be the youngest of three daughters and a newliwed by his legacy of “one cow and calfe to her first child if it please God she have any...” Thus she was about 15 at the time of her marriage to JAMES BAGNALL. By this time REBECCA BAGNALL, JAMES’s mother and widow of ROGER BAGNALL, had remairred to RICHARD IZARD. As was saw earlier, the IZARDs did not move into Rev. ROBERT BRACEWELL’s neighborhood near the Church until the Summer of 1664, only a couple of years before the Reverend’s will. Yet our Immigrant Ancestor trusted the IZARDs enough to entrust his minor children and all his estate to them. This strongly suggests a prior relationship between these three, probably one that went back to London days, according to Eunice Young. Some have suggested that REBECCA BAGNALL IZARD was the Reverend’s sister. Were that true it would present two problems: One, that REBECCA would have had to have immigrated a decade or so before her “brother”, an unlikely event; and Two, there was no mention of a daughter, REBECCA, in the 1641 London will of RICHARD BRACEWELL. We might throw in a third objection, namely that this would have ANN marrying her first cousin, although this was a not uncommon occurrence among the landed gentry of Virginia. Recall from previous Document the swap of homeplaces that happened in 1674 between JAMES and ANN BAGNALL and ROBERT BRACEWELL, Jr.,{ just before the latter moved out into the oblivion of recordless colonial Nansemond.} From this same period it is interesting to note that JAMES BAGNALL was among the signers of the October, 1677, petition by the inhabitants of Isle of Wight County for the pardon of WILLIAM WEST. BAGNALL’s mother, REBECCA IZARD, made her will in Isle of Wight County October 15, 1675: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - WILL OF REBECCA IZZARD IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN, I REBECCAH IZARD, being sicke in body, but of sound & prfectt memorie, I doe make this my last will and Testam: Imprimis I bequeath my soule, unto the Almightie God, trusting through the Meirritts of my Savio:r Jesus Christ: to inheritt eternall life, my body I bequeath onto the Earth to be buried in a Decent manner, & for my Worldly estate, I bequeath as followeth/ Imprmis my will is: that After, my Daughter REBECAH BAGNALLS estate, be taken out of the whole estate, of mine, And my Daughter MARTHA IZARD, and the Debts paid, then the estate, to be equallie, Divided, betwixt me, & my aforesaid Daughter MARTHA IZARD, then out of my proportion,I give and bequeath as followeth/ I Give, unto REBECAH BAGNALL, & MARY BENNETT, and MARTHA IZARD, & JAMES BAGNALL, NEAMIAH HUNTT, the Sonne of GODFREY HUNTT, & ELZABETH REEVES, the daughter of HENRY REEVES, all my proportion of Estate before exprssd, to be equally devided, betwixt them, And my Will is, that my Sonne JAMES BAGNALL, HENRY REEVES and AMBROSE BENNETT to be my overseeors , to see my Will performed, To wch Will and Testam:t I have hereunto sett my hand this Fiveteenth day of October 1675/ The mark (x) of REBECAH IZARD Teste JOHN BURNELL WILLIAM WESTRA This will was proved by oathe of John Burnell and William Westra in open court held for Isle of Whight County the 20th day of October 1675 and then recorded Teste Jno: Jennings: Cl Ct. -- - --- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - REBECCA’s will proves a close tie to AMBROSE BENNETT, close neighbor of our Immigrant Reverend BRACEWELL (Cf. Doc1.doc), i.e. that her daughter, MARY, was his wife--yet another clue to the close-knit relationships among these Virginia gentry. An interesting document (#A17A141, Daniel Family) in the Temple Records in Salt Lake City{author not named} entitled “Daniel Family of York County, Virginia, and Allied Lines”, contains the following assertions about RICHARD IZARD and REBECCA BAGNALL IZARD: “RICHARD IZZARD married REBECCA BAGNALL, widow sister of Rev. BRASWELL after 1647. RICHARD IZZARD died in Isle of Wight County in 1669. From his will and that of his wife, his children were: (1) MARY, who married AMBROSE BENNETT (2) REBECCA, who married JAMES BAGNALL (Jr.) (3) A daughter who married GODFREY HUNT (4) MARTHA, who married, first, WALTER RUTTER, and second, THOMAS ALLEN (5) ELIZABETH, who married HENRY REEVES, who died in Old Rappahannock County in 1686, leaving a will. No sons are mentioned in the IZZARD wills, but there is little doubt that JOHN and RALPH IZZARD, the latter prominent with GOVERNOR ROBERT DANIEL in South Carolina, were his {RICHARD IZARD’s} sons.” {At last we come to the source of the misinformation that Rev. Could anyone please help us find the lineage of Hartleys father John Bracewell who came from Bracewell England? His wife was Mary Starkie. John died around 1846. They Had sons, Hartley and Henry who came to America in 1849. They came to New Orleans and traveled by river up to St. Louis where they finally settled in Greene Co. Illinois. Three other sons, John, Starkie and James came in 1850 . We are the descendants from Hartley Bracewell. I have all of the lineage up until John Bracewell, Hartleys father, and there it stops. I haven't seen any emails from this line of the Bracewells. Any info would certainly be appreciated. From ???@??? The first time is in the heading "Children of Robert and Rebecca Braswell" where the five children are listed. The second time is in the first paragraph of the chapter on ROBERT BRACEWELL, JUNIOR 1650 - 1702. Here, she sites her source as "Southside Virginia Families, Bodie, p.193". Hence, you are right about the source of her error. The other source she sites on the early history of the family is "The Braswell Family, by Elizabeth Braswell Pearsall". On the matter of from whom William Bracewell (1680-1720) descended, Viola does admit that there is confusion over which William Bracewell moved to Chowan County, NC. I did get a chuckle over the following paragraph: "Although there is some uncertainty as to which William is which, both were direct descendants of the Reverend Robert Bracewell of Isle of Wright County, Virginia." (p.13). On the matter of St. Luke's church, the church is set in the middle of a sizable cemetery with many of the headstones too worn to be readable. It was indeed a very quiet and spiritual experience. There was a lady who gave us a tour of the church and told us some of its history. The only thing she knew on the Reverend Robert Bracewell was that he was an early rector of the church. She pointed out a plaque in his memory on the bench on the front left side of the church. Our children were excited about the back left stained glass window which was in memory of Pocahontas. It listed her three names - "Pocahontas" which was her nick name, "Matoaca" which was her given name at birth, and "Rebecca" which was her Christian name. Pocahontas and the church, however, did not co-exist as Lady Rebecca died many years before the church was built. One other interesting paragraph from Viola's book is the following: "Robert Bracewell's pastorate, known as Lawne's Creek Parish, was in the vicinity of the present boundary line between Surry and Isle of Wright counties. The name of Lawne's Creek was changed in 1737 to Southwark Parish." (p. 8) I do not know when the name became "St. Luke's". Cousin (in-law) Victor From ???@??? It quotes the Verse I was seeking> Archbishop Parker of the Anglican church in 1695 made a list of the prohibited marriages. Most states adhered to this list but it included niece, nephew, sister-in-law, etc. but cousin was not included except in PA where the Quazkers made the laws and they didn't like first cousin marriages, they frowned on 2nd cousin but permitted it. I was on vacation for several days and EVERYTHING is backed up on me. Try posting a specific request for one or two people at a time. It is possible that someone will be able to help that way. I will try to look into some of your information as soon as I get the chance. Talk to you soon. Keith, I recently subscribed to your BRASWELL list and have been reading the postings. I sent the following message on June 29 and again on July 6 and have had no response. I have to conclude that none of the people on your mailing lists have any connection with this set of Braswells. Do you have any information on any of these names? If not, I guess I need to unsubscribe. Also, is there a digest mode so that the messages can be posted all together? I knew the John Wesley Braswell sounded familiar. I did save your first posting to the list, but I simply forgot to do anything about it. I also thought you might hear from someone more knowledgeable about your family. On Family Treemaker World Family Tree, Vol. 4 and submitter #2765 I found your John Wesley Braswell with not a lot more info. On their family tree, the father of William Henry Braswell b.03-DEC-1817 is listed as Irvin William Braswell b.02-MAR-1790 Wayne, NC d.02-OCT-1845. Then, his father is the Richard Braswell b.27-OCT-1781 and no death date and no spouse listed, the same as you have. Then his father is the Richard Braswell who married Penelope Blow. Would you like a list of their other children? On the same CD and by the same submitter is your Hiram Bryant Braswell. He is listed as b.22-OCT-1799 with no death date or place and no spouse and no child. You might want to contact the submitter of all this to compare notes. His father is listed as the Richard Braswell who married Penelope Blow above. So, you are correct in that the two sets of Braswells are related. If you have access to the internet the address to find the submitter by #2765 is: http://www.familytreemaker.com You will be asked for a 7-digit number which is 6670411. That is the number on the back of the CD. If you do NOT have access to the internet, I will be glad to mail you a copy of what I found if you will furnish your snail mail address. Another reason John Wesley Braswell sounded familiar is that my great grandfather, Robert Braswell had a brother by that name and coincidentally he married a Rosa A. Mills. So, don't give up Donna and please, don't go! La Vera (Brasuell) Caruthers rjllc@juno.com Tomorrow, today will be yesterday. LLC From ???@??? I think that William (no middle initial) who died in 1720 and was married to Mary was the son of Richard and Sarah Braswell and that this is a legitimate line. Carey knows more about the Braswells way back when, than I do though and I'm sure he'll have some comments for you. I've been wondering who Aaron Braswell's parents were for the longest time. Can you give me some additional information about him - where and when was he born? His wife Nancy Williams was the sister of my ancestor Samuel Williams who married Sarah Braswell. Did you know that Nancy and Samuel's mother was also a Braswell? She was Lucretia Braswell, daughter of William and Martha Braswell. (William was the son of William and Margaret Braswell - the ones you already have in your lineage.) So you and I share the distinction of having a double Braswell lineage. May I print your family information in my newsletter, Braswell Branches? There are others who've been wondering where Aaron came from. Also I'd appreciate family group sheets on your lines. The only children of Nancy and Aaron, I've been able to find were in the census records and I'm missing the names of the older ones. I now can cite my sources, but I found this when I was very new to genealogy and thus did not write it down. At the top of the page=General Services Administration National Archives and Records Service File Designation=W3930 Receipt No.=39470 Name of searcher=A. H. Date=4/7/61 Pages=8 (I have 2.) North Carolina, Anson County Affidavit of Richard Braswell and Penelope Braswell his wife. Why they fix the date of the marriage of Sampson Braswell & Lucretia his wife to be December 21st, 1780. We Richard Braswell & Penelope his wife do certify that we were married in the fall of the year 1780 in Oct. and that our first child was born October 27, 1781 as appears on record in my family register, kept by us of our childrens ages and Brother Sampson & Lucretia Wade was married four days before new Christmas of the same year. As we all lived in the same neighbourhood at that time and has continued to live near each other to the present day. And the said Lucretia Braswell is not able to be carried to the court house, it being 16 or 17 miles. That she is hardly ever able to attend her church meetings which is near hand, that her disease & infirmness increases on her continually. Not a doubt remaining on our minds after refering to the family register, but that Sampson Braswell & Lucretia Wade was married on the 21st December 1780. And that Sampson Braswell Dec. (deceased?) served in behalf of the United States as has been before stated and that Shadrick Braswell another Brother served his country faithfully, but is long since no more. I have a question that perhaps you or some of the other Braswell researchers can answer for me, since I haven't thoroughly researched the Edgecombe records. Sampson appears in the Edgecombe records in 1757. In 1760 he buys a 119 acre plantation on the Tar River. He is next heard from when his father (in his will dated 7 December 1767 & probated 1772) leaves him the land on the Tar River and Nahunta Path. Carey Bracewell's Georgia index shows a Sampson in Wilkinson County in 1779 and in Washington County in 1781, 1784, 1793, 1795 (Laurens County from Washington). Question No. 1: Does anyone know if and when Sampson sold the 119 acre plantation on the south bank of the Tar River? (Sampson purchased it from Richard Bracewell, Sr., on 21 March 1760, you state that 87 acres of this trace was part of a tract granted to Francis Griss bearing date 8 June 1739, and another part of the tract granted to Francis Grise was purchased from Thomas Grise of Johnston County on 30 October 1762 by James Bracewell. Does that mean that he sold the property sometime before 30 October 1762? If so, where did he go from 1762 to about 1779 or 1781 when he appears in Georgia and from 1785 to 1793? He could be the Sampson in Surry. Question No. 2: Does anyone know if and when he sold the property on Tar River which he received in his father's will? The reason I ask these two questions is that a Sampson Braswell and a George Braswell appear in the tax lists in Surry County in 1771 and 1772. Then in 13 July 1773, Surry County court, he appears in the Court of Oyer & Terminer, Idem vs. Henry Snow, Wm. Boyls, Sampson Brasil, John Connel, Richard Horn, Francis Gideons, Frederick Green, Peter Boyeter (I must see if this is "Boyton"), John Horn (Journal of Surry County, January 1985, Volume 5, #1). Sampson appears again in 1774 in the tax list in Martin Armstrong's district, with 1 pole. The preceding entry is David Green, who received a grant on Bean Shoal Creek, 100 acres in 1780), so I assume Sampson was living on Bean Shoal Creek at that time. I also seem to call that Sampson was in a court case in 1785, but I can't find that reference right now. He then disappears from Surry County. I am trying to figure out where this Sampson Surry belongs. Any help with the Tar River property would be very much appreciated, to help me eliminate that Sampson as being the Sampson in Surry. You have got a lot further back in your family tree than I have. I had a recent query from a Jack Bracewell in florida who was asking after a family crest. I believe the body of my reply is worth posting to you: > About 20 miles from me there is a hamlet called Bracewell. Its near > Barnoldswick in Lancashire. Your post > may be the impetus I need to make the journey (but don't hold your > breath, I'm very busy at the moment (:-)> ) Interesting that your Bracewell is an Edmund and mine an Edmondson ..... My elder brother is called Robert, but I don't know of any family tradition for Robert as a name. If you have seen my website you will have noticed my interest in the 1640s. I really will have to research the Bracewell church end. But not this month. Currently laid up with an abscess on my leg. As soon as I am mobile I am going to an English Civil War battle in Devon - if I am fit to travel before the weekend. I should be back early august, so I will try to make time to do some research then. What is the basis of your research? Is it family or a commercial search? Have you come across any interesting members in the intervening years? Thanks for your mail. I have put you address in my address book pending further developments.
