It is obviously an important contribution to our Braswell database. Many of our fellow researchers are sure to benefit from it. FYI, when I first started my research in 1958, very few census returns were indexed so I read many in the original (via microfilm), notably the 1830 schedules for most Southern states. An obviously knowledgeable researcher who shares a common interest in the same pioneer Arkansas Baptist families! And who lives in of all places, Maumelle, AR ! Whoa! I can still remember my Greataunt LAURA BRAZIL (1869-1953)-the family historian of her generation--talking about family doings on "Big Maumelle". Laura was the first of Deacon JESSE BRAZIL (1827-1888) 's children born after he permanently moved from Brazil (Paron), Arkansas, to Texas. Incidentally, he was soon joined here by his aged parents, MOSES (1803-1872) and MATILDA JANE ALLEN BRAZIL (1805-1872), who sold their their Brazil, Ark place {including the postmastership of Brazil, Ark} to WILLIAM DYER (80 acres, Sec. 5, 1N 16W) and their homeplace (40 acres, Sec, 6, 1N 16W) to their daughter, ;ELIZABETH ANN CHASTAIN, wife of BENJAMIN CHASTAIN, on October 29, 1869 (Saline County deeds....no citation...this was data turned up insitu during my first year of research). The rest of JESSE BRAZIL's "Gone to Texas" party would interest you: his four oldest children (by first wife, MARTHA JANE HUCHINGSON (1828-1852), daughter of the prominent JOHN HUCHINGSON; Jesse's wife, ELIZA JANE PRILLEMAN BRAZIL (1835-1907), daughter of the equally wealthy and influential planter, JACOB PRILLEMAN, Sr. of Prilleman Mountain memory; their 8 year-old daugher, MARTHA (all the younger sibs had died of disease or mishap); sundry nieces and nephews ("four sets") orphaned by the Civil War, and a few freed slaves who preferred to remain with the family and find their fortunes in Texas.,,,, Now to your letter: A quick glance at my records would seem to indicate that the first contact between the BRAZIls and the TERRYs occured in Johnson County, Illinois Territory, toward the end of the first decade of the 1800's: that's when RICHARD BRAZIL (1759-c.1842) moved from Calf Killer Fork(Third District), White County, Tennessee, to near present Vienna, Illinois (RICHARD BRAZIL to WILLIAM USSERY by power of attorney of "trusty friend SAMUEL USREY", White DB E-251, September 20, 1809). RICHARD's clan appears on (p.82) the Federal Census of 1810, Clear Creek area, Randolph (later Johnson) County as: R(ichard) BRASSEL 2 under 10 (VALENTINE & MOSES), 1 10-15 (ROBERT), 1 16-26 (unknown, possibly EDWARD) and 1 45 & over (RICHARD, Sr) 1 under 10 (JEMIMA, m. GEORGE JAMES c. 1823), 1 45 & over (JEMIMA WHITE BRAZIL) D(ick) BRASEL Newliwed couple, both 16-26. RICHARD BRAZIL had married "Poly" (MARY ANN) ALLEN, d/o SQUIRE & MARTHA ALLEN, on March 13, 1810. She was an elder sister to MATILDA ALLEN, my gg-grandmother. G(eorge) BRASELL RICHARD & JEMIMA's oldest surviving son. born in Wilkes County, NC c. 1782, shown here as male 26-45 (about 28) with wife 16-26 and two sons and a daughter under 10. This family stayed behind when the rest moved to Missouri. One of the cogent records linking this family to the TERRYs is SARAH ANN TERRY BRAZIL PRILLEMAN's 1856 Bounty Land application on the service of her late husband, Captain ROBERT BRAZIL (the 14-year old kid on the 1810 Census, above). ROBERT commanded Company "B" (Saline County), 1st Regiment, Arkansas Mounted Gunmen in the Indian Removal of 1836. SARAH, who signed by mark, gave her age as 57 (as of Oct. 2, 1856) and stated that she "...was married to the Said ROBERT BRAZIL in the Territory of Illinois in the year 1813 by Henson Day, a justice of the peace, and that her name before her marriage was SARAH ANN TERRY...." SARAH went on the attest that ROBERT died October 26, 1841 QUESTION: Was there an epidemic in Saline County in 1841? A bunch of folks seemed to have checked out in that year! and that she married JACOB PRILLAMAN (sic) October 30, 1842 {note the timing} who went on to that great Plantation House in the Sky November 20, 1852. It is a reflection of the intense endogamy of these pioneer Baptists (by class and denomination) that SARAH was step-mother to my g-grandmother, ELIZA PRILLEMAN BRAZIL (1835-1907)! Whether it was rejected on the grounds that she could not document her marriage to ROBERT or that she was already filthy rich remains a moot question (National Archives, Washington,D.C.: Bounty Land Warrant 260050-Rejected-1855). The BRAZIL-JAMES connection seems to have originated in Wayne (now Ripley) County, Missouri, after the War of 1812 period. With the loss of all Wayne records before 1854, there are aspects to this puzzle that will never be solved. Fortunately, our families did not tarry there too long before heading south into the Powhattan, AR area. Concerning what you shared from your Arkansas expertise, I have the following questions and comments: 1. Could I please have the citation and text of the information that RICHARD BRAZIL (with Re. JESSE JAMES) was sent by the Bethel Missouri Baptist Associaton to form the first Baptist church in Arkansas? I knew RICHARD was a member of Salem Church, but not that he was a founder. My only source--Rogers' "History of Arkansas Baptists" (1948) states that Elders BENJAMIN CLARK and JESSE JAMES organized Salem and that CALEB LINDSEY was possibly its first pastor. Some confusion here, but naturally I would like to make a claim for our RICHARD. 2. Sorting out the RICHARDs BRASWELL is just about our favorite passtime in this family research . It is the oldest regularly used Christian name among the Braswells, going back to Tudor times, and distinguishing among them can be fun. This one (the church founder) was doubtless the state representative, he who married MARY ANN ALLEN in 1810, not RICHARD, Sr., who was nearly 60. 3. Would you please share the relevant data and citations from the "1829 Sheriff census" for Randolph County and the 1831 tax lists? These must have been published in recent years, yes? 4. Concerning the RICHARDs BRAZIL on the 1840 Saline census, RICHARD BRAZIL Sen,of Union TWP, then aged 81, was of course the Patriarch (p.207); the RICHd BRAZIL in Saline TWP, p. 210, was RICHARD, Jr. He was actually about 51 although his age is shown here as 40-49, like his wife. Note that they are living nextdoor to his brother-in-law, ALFRED ALLEN; Then at p. 214 in Owen TWP we find one RICHARD BRAZIL in his 20's, clearly the widower of your NANCY JAMES, living alone with his two little motherless daughters. If memory serves, he was RICHARD III, s/o RICHARD, Jr. & MARY ANN ALLEN. Note on the enumeration of November 2, 1850, (p. 117, Household 481-499) that his firstborn was named MARY in the Southern tradition of perpetuating family names. N.B. also that he was only two households away from CAREY & GEORGE JAMES on these 1850 schedules. I do find one inconsistency in our records: mine show NANCY & RICHARD marrying on May 11, 1837, to your July 4. Did she perhaps marry on her birthday? 5. About who's buried in the Brazil plot near Martindale Church on Highway 10: there must be some mistake about RICHARD's age at death: 78 would have made him older than his father, who was born in Greenville District, SC, about 1789 as the AR Gazette bio of 1842 correctly reports. He had to be closer to 48 at death. Carey From ???@??? My Aunt Virginia, God love her, has gotten the geniebug. Being a newbie, she hasn’t learned all the ins and outs and forgot to jot down all the details of the source. The best I can tell you is that it is from a history written of Clay County, Indiana. I just received the photocopy from the page of the book today from her and I can at least tell you it is on page 140. After reading through it, I feel strongly that this branch is tied in with the infamous “Reverend Braswell” branch somewhere. One or more of you more knowledgable Braswell researchers will have to determine the truth of this. But, regardless, here it is for all to see and use. The emphasized capitals are my own. Note that although I have copied the dates and names as written, I feel some of them may have been typos. Brazle Family History REVIS W. BRAZLE served in the Brea Christian Church for almost twenty years coming there on February 21, 1960. During his tenure, the church became one of the largest, if not the largest, rural churches in Clay County. It members number over 400 with an average worship attendance of over 200 each Lord’s Day morning contrasted with less than 100 members and a worship attendance of less than 50 at the beginning of REV. BRAZLE’S ministry. The church annually gives more than $12,000.00 to missions, compared to about $100.00 previously. A new house of worship and a three-bedroom parsonage have been constructed, which increased their property evaluation considerably. The BRAZLE family came to Fayette County, Illinois, early in the 1800’s. VALENTINE BRAZEL (one of the early and most common variations of spelling, of which there are many) is recorded as the first settler in Carson Township in 1816. Records state that he and TOM HIGGINS, an Indian fighter of some repute, built a log cabin on the banks of Ramsey Creek. This was the first house built in the township and his son, ROBERT, was the first child born in the township. RICHARD BRAZLE and JAMES BRAZLE were probably brothers of VALENTINE, and all three came to Fayette County before 1820, with all or part of them living first in Madison County before moving to Fayette. JAMES BRAZLE was born in 1802 in Tennessee, the state where the family had been before coming to Illinois. Records state that he settled in Sefton Township on May 7, 1819, and died January 1852. His children were CLOEY, BENJAMIN and VALENTINE. VALENTINE BRAZLE was born November 13, 1831. He served with Co. G., 7th Illinois Cavalry in the Civil War. Returning in ill health, he died on October 7, 1875, at the age of 43 years. He had seven children: BENJAMIN, ANDREW, THOMAS, GEORGE, JOSEPH, JOHN FREDRICK and MILLY. JOHN FREDRICK BRAZLE ws born in 1872 and died in 1953. He had twelve children: MAMIE, LOIS, MILAS, IRENE, ESTHER, MANCEL, CECIL, NOLA, LOLA, HUBERT, MERLIN and LOREN. MILAS BRAZLE was born December 1, 1900, and married LILLY GRANDFIELD February 13, 1926. Six children were born to them: FREDRICK, REVIS, WILMA, VERNON, KENNETH and LINDA. MILAS and LILLY BRAZLE were farmers in Sefton Township, Fayette County, Illinois. REVIS BRAZLE, was born May 16, 1929. He married ROGENE CUNNINGHAM August 18, 1956. They have two children, JANE, born April 18, 1964 and JOEL, born May 2, 1974, in Brazil. They currently reside in New Market, Indiana, where he is the minister of the New Market Christian Church. Their daughter, JANE, graduated from Rushville High School in 1982 and attended Cincinnati Bible and Lincoln Christian colleges. She married REV. ROBERT MONTGONEY on September 1, 1984, at the New Market Christian Church. REV. MONTGONEY, is the son of BILL MONTGONEY of Olney, Illinois, and LINDA ROSS, of Morganfield, Kentucky. He is a graduate of St. Louis Christian College where he received a bachelor or arts degree in Christian ministry and a bachelor of theology diploma. He graduated from Union County High School in Morganfield, Kentucky, in 1979. He is currently a minister of the Dalton City Christian Church at Dalton City, Illinois. The BRAZLE family is of German descent and has been in the U.S. since colonial times, while still existing in Germany today. A number of BRAZLE families are listed in North and South Carolina in the census of the original thirteen colonies taken in 1970 (sic). One of these is a VALENTINE BRAZEL of Edgefield County, South Carolina. While no definite connection has been established, the name VALENTINE and the spelling BRAZEL, (the same as the VALENTINE BRAZEL who settled in Illinois 26 years later) suggests a possible, if not probably, relationship. NOTE: The city of Brazil is in Clay County, Indiana. ************ Enjoy! As to the spamming, I hate to see Nona leave us over this. Are there filters that perhaps Keith could employ on his browser? In reviewing the vertical file material I obtained while in Sumner County, TN, I have three comments: 1. Melvin F. Brazzell's material says that a William Brassell (and a Brittan Brassell) were listed in the 1790 census in Johnston County, NC, that William Brassell was listed as head of household; also listed: 2 free white females, 1 black male 12-50, 1 black female under 12-over 50. He says that William Brassell was born in 1778 in North Carolina. In 1790 William would only be 12 years old, so I submit that the William in Johnston County is not the William of Sumner County. Perhaps the William in Johnston County is an uncle, since Melvin and others believe Williams' father was Britton. 2. He says that William married Margaret Halfaker in North Carolina, that his children were as follows: 1) Henry Truitt Brassell born about 1800 (I estimate his birth in 1806, based on the 1820 census); (2) Wylie Brassell (I esimtate his birth about 1804); (3) Julia (Judy) Brassell born North Carolina (I estimate her birth in 1802); (4) Polly Brassell born Tennessee (I estimate her birth in 1812); (5) Benjamin Brassell born North Carolina (I estimate his birth as 1800); (6) William B. Brassell born 1810. Melvin F. Brazzell says that Julia and Benjamin were born in North Carolina (I had Benjamin's birth at 1800), so William didn't come to Tennessee until probably after 1806, at which time I say he lived on the Halfacre grant until he perfected title in 1811 (see #3 below). Is there any proof as to Henry T.'s birth date? There are no references or authorities cited in his material. 3. He says that William Brassell was from Johnston County, North Carolina, and obtained a 640-acre land grant from the North Carolina goverment in 1792. If William was born in 1778, in 1792 he would have been 14 years of age. The grant was on the waters of Station Camp Creek and the middle of the East Fork Runway. This property is apparently today between Gallatin and Hendersonville. Then he goes on to say that the land was obtained from Reuben Douglass on February 2, 1826. (The dates don't jive) In the Tennessee land grant section of the archives in Nashville, is the following: a deed was recorded September 3, 1811, D-699, #339, military service perfected by Conrad Halfaker to State of North Carolina, warrant #3924 8 December 1795 and retired (?) 2 September 1811 by #6818 as an occupant claim under law of 1809. Granted to William Brazel, assignee of heirs of Conrad Halfaker, 49 ac., 70 poles, lying in Sumner County in the first district on the middle fork of Station Camp Creek including his improvement, beginning at a stake corner to Reuben Douglas at Robert Marshall's line; then west 5 poles with said line to a stake corner to said Marshalls; north west his line 226 poles to hickory corner to Porterfield, east with his line 35 poles to a stake in Reuben Douglass's line; south with his line 226 poles to beginning. Surveyed 17 July 1810 by William Montgomery, D.S. What this says, I think, is that he lived on the property, which perhaps was his father-in-law's property, and then perfected the title as an occupant under law of 1809. I don't think he was the one who received the grant. Any comments? Do you know Melvin F. Brazzell? Gayle B. Ellison gayleell@cdsnet.net ICQ 3108760 From ???@??? In 1794 your William Brazzell/Brassel would only be 14 years old. Are you sure of your William's birth date? I personally think the 1794 entry belongs to another William. Keith *** Forwarded Note *** Subject: Re:Clay County, Indiana BRAZEL From: edhall@telapex.com Date: 17 Nov 97 21:41 To: Braswell-L@emcee.com CC: **** Dear Cousins: Due to the fact that some of our cousins are on AOL and have problems downloading attachments, I decided to copy and paste this from my word processor for all to see. Hello LaVera & everyone: Thanks for the info on Robert Brasuell and Sarah M. James. Well, now I'm back online, armed with the latest McAfee anti-virus program, and with a new (Xmas present) Scanner to boot! Lots going on: I'm in touch with Cousin Eunice Young and have some important new insights into the family of VALENTINE BRASWELL (c.1684-c.1763) {note changes in dates, Gayle) in Orange/Chatham counties (NC) and beyond.Gayle has sent me a sheaf of documents that I'm still analyzing, and will incorporate with the abovementioned material on VALENTINE. I am so blessed! Truly, we receive much when we give unselfishly. I also have some more comentary on his father RICHARD BRACEWELL (c.1652-1725) before proceeding to Documents 11 & 12. I didn't see a whole lot of reaction to Doc10 (RICHARD) but the importance of these data is self- evident so I really don't need a lot of "ataboys"---which may have come through while my "puter was down anyway! Nona, would you enter a subscription to your marvelous "Braswell Branches" for Eunice? (1894 East 8325 South, Sandy, Utah 84093) You can bill me--$12, right? She expressed an interest in same. Although deeply overcommited to other lines, I have revived her interest in our Braswell research (she descends from DIANA BRASWELL SMITH, granddaughter of our RICHARD & OBEDIENCE ). As you know, she is a professional genealogist and has expert knowledge of our English origins. I almost regret promising to trace the grandsons of our RICHARD I (c.1652-1725). Such a task--but a useful one for those struggling to "connect" with the Immigrant. This one I'll run past Bill Fields before presenting it to the List. Keith, what do you think about a directory of current Braswell researchers? It bothers me to not be able to put new people in touch with more experienced researchers on those lines other than my own. They can of course access the wonderful Archives file, but that would be a certainly tedious--and hit or miss--proposition. A clear, updatable list of current researchers (not just curiosity-seekers) along with their area of interest (oldest proved Braswell ancestor, counties of interest, etc.) would, I believe, be a worthwhile contribution to our work. {Wondering whether Keith will now say, "Great! Do it!}, I remain-- Your affectionate cousin, Carey From ???@??? It is pleasant surprises like yours that keep us all in this fascinating detective game. You were so kind to share, and I hope that you find that I also give as good as I take! Your most important additions to this researcher's Arkansas file concerned RICHARD BRAZIL (1789-186-): the records you shared placed him in Lawrence County a good 12 years earlier than mine (although I knew he was there by his absence elsewhere, notably Illinois or Pulaski County). Of course you knew that they came from Wayne (Ripley) County, Missouri, before that (four families of JAMES' on the 1830 Census of Wayne County, including your Rev. JESSE JAMES). No doubt the JAMES trail will lead you back to Tennessee or/and Kentucky, the common Southern immigration route. RICHARD must have been a Baptist "Elder" (lay preacher/church leader) to have been given the responsibility of helping establish Salem BaptistChurch, Arkansas' First. He was only one link in our chain of Braswell spiritual leaders that goes back to the Immigrant ancestor, Rev. ROBERT BRACEWELL (1611-1668) whose church in Virginia (St. Luke's, Isle of Wight) is the oldest existing Protestant church in America. RICHARD's obvious gift for oratory probably also helps explain (besides family connections) his election to represent Saline County in the 1840-1842 terms. You asked about his resignation from the county judgeship: yes, he had to resign as County Judge in order to run as Representative. Goodspeed affirms RICHARD's judgeship during 1838-1840 and also states that his brother, ROBERT, served as "Judge of the County" during the same period. The Circuit Court minute of June 5, 1821 (Lawrence County) was more valuable than you could have guessed: not only did it show that "our" community in Spring River Township was called "Brazil" but it also identified a "William Brazil's Mill": WILLIAM BRASWELL (1766-185_) was a very colorful uncle to this RICHARD, one whose travels around the upper Mississippi Valley were vagabound, even for these hardy English/Scotch-Irish pioneers! He (WILLIAM) finally wound up in Carroll County in northwestern Arkansas where he founded a large family of BRASWELL (Brasuell)s. The significant thing about their home being called "Brazil Settlement" (aside from the natural pride one feels in having a whole community bearing one's name) is that this perhaps explains an old myth in my family: it was the one, perpetuated by my Great Aunt LAURA (1869-1953) that "before Maumelle, the Brazils lived in Brazil, Indiana, which they founded." Well, the Brazils never went near Indiana; and published local histories all agree that Brazil, Indiana, was named for the South American country.BUT the Brazils did come from the Illinois-Indiana area and there was a Brazil community before the one in present Saline County. For a semi-literate, nearly blind Texas frontierswoman, Laura did pretty good in preserving family lore. It just fell my lot (a characteristic of November 5th folks, I understand) to be the "dispeller of myths"--a role I must admit I relish! I especially enjoy deflating egos puffed-up on excessive family pride! The one record that you shared that touched me most though, Carole, was the item from your HORNER JAMES' probate record of November 4, 1856, in which is itemized his $11.00 or so indebtedness to MOSES BRAZIL (my gg-gf), We knew from Laura that MOSES owned a store and postoffice in Brazil, Arkansas; however, I had never turned up anything to show what he sold, and this record did: "1 wool hat, 1 pair of pantaloons, coffee, pipe and tobacco, spelling book, more tobacco, paper and tobacco, nails, etc." (By the way, they were tobacco growers/consumers from the gitgo in America} Would you please share the entire list? These fascinating tidbits of course are what humanize and bring to life our otherwise dreary legal records. In this instance, it proves this man had a generalstore-type operation along with his cotton-farming activities. FYI, his son, MOSES, Jr. (1845-1919) worked the store and later opened a saloon in San Saba, Texas--which scandalized his brother JESSE's pious country family! And before I leave the subject, let me correct an error in my previous letter: MOSES did not sell his postoffice operation (as part of the store) to DYER in 1869: postal records show that the Brazil, Ark, Postoffice was closed June 22, 1866, and reopened September 25, 1876, with WILEY B. FOWLER as Postmaster. Now as to what I have to share with you: are you interested in the Ouchita County JAMES? A Mrs. Helfrey from Dallas kindly shared her research into the families of VALENTINE BRASWELL and JOHN JAMES, 1817-1863, consort of RACHAEL CAROLINE BRASWELL; and WILLIAM JAMES, 1822-1895, consort of MARIAH E. BRASWELL, 1825-1880, including cemetery records. I have done some Ouchita County research insitu, and found that the current County Judge is a Braswell of VALENTINE's lineage {with so many of us so early in central Arkansas and with so many political genes, is their a connection with President Clinton's ancestry? I've yet to see his pedigree. We are definitely related to President Johnson through one of our Immigrant's daughters.} An examination of other country files in my Arkansas collection revealed these items of probable interest to you: (1) The 1833 petition to Congress asking for preemption rights to the land they settled (before a landoffice opened locally) signed by GEORGE "JONES" (signing next to RICHARD BRAZIL), and these 3 in succession: WILLIAM TERRY, ROBERT BRAZIL, CAREY JAMES. (Petition granted; pioneers alllowed to buy their land at minimum price of $1.25/acre) (2) The 1836 affidavit of RICHARD & ROBERT BRAZIL for premption rights to their farms under the 1833 Act which also mentions near neighbors GEORGE JAMES and GEORGE S. TERRY (3) The companion 1836 affidavit of VALENTINE BRAZIL mentioning his partner GEORGE JAMES (who settled the quarter-section with VAL) who "cultivated about 8 acres of land on the north part of the said quarter section in corn and cotton and had a log dwelling house, smoke house, in the year 1833 and in the year 1834 he had a horse mlll erected; that GEORGE JAMES commenced his said improvement in the year 1831 and is stll there {April 22, 1836}; that GEORGE JAMES is a married man and has a family consisting of a wife and six children." Witnessed by "near neighbors" ROBERT BRAZIL and ANDREW McALISTER.(12/9/1881. LEWIS JAMES, owner, applied for duplicate title) (4) 10/6/1838. RICHARD BRAZIL bought 80 acres in Sec.12 & 13, Twp 1S 15W from TURNER S. TERRY. (5) 2/7/1844. VALENTINE & ELIZABETH BRAZIL to GEORGE JAMES, for $100, some real estate in Benton. (6) 8/3/1844. VAL bought "personal property" (probably slaves) from GEORGE S. TERRY. Let me know if you want more information about these items. Carey From ???@??? REBECCA BRACEWELL and her elder sister, JANE, were probably born in England, their younger siblings in Virginia. As we saw in her father’s 1668 will, REBECCA was married by this time to WILLIAM WEST and was already bearing his children since a legacy was left to “...the next child she shall beare.” According to Boddie {Boddie, John B. “Seventeenth Century Isle of Wight County, Virginia”. Chicago Law Printing Company, Chicago: 1938.} WILLIAM was the son of HENRY WEST who immigrated from England in 1622 aboard the “Margaret & John”. That WILLIAM WEST was a man of considerable means is shown by the following patents for more than 4,000 acres in 1663-1665: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - To all &c Whereas &c now Know Ye That I the said Sir William Berkeley Knight Governor &c give and grant unto Mr WILLIAM WEST Two thousand five hundred acres of Land lying on the Eastward side of Poquimun River being about Six or Seven Miles up the said River beginning at a marked White oak on a point of Land Near a great marsh and nigh an Indian Fields runing north east 320 Poles then Southeast 1250 poles, then Southwest 320 poles to a marked white oak at the Mouth of a small Creek called Curaticks and from thence up the said River of Perquirmin to the first station. The said Land being due to the said WEST for Transportation of fifty persons &c To Have and TO HOLD &C. To be Held &c Yielding and paying &c provided &c Dated the 25th of September 1663.-- Virginia Land Grants, Volume 4, Page 589 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Governor Berkeley to NICHOLAS COPELAND and WILLIAM WEST, 1589 acres “on the North side Rappahannock County about two miles from the river side. . . for the transportation of thirty two Persons . . . . Dated the twenty fifth of September one thousand six hundred & sixty five” Virginia Land Grants, Volume 5, page 456 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - We have seen previously (Doc5) that WILLIAM and REBECCA BRACEWELL WEST purchased 100 acres of the 400-acre “UNDERWOOD” tract from her brother, RICHARD BRACEWELL, March 14, 1673/4. On September 21st following, the WESTS purchased another 700 acres in Isle of Wight County. Boddie {Ibid.} has this to say of WILLIAM WEST’s participation in Bacon’s Rebellion : “The WEST family strongly opposed Governor Berkeley during Bacon’s Rebellion, because HENRY WEST, father of the family, had been barbarously murdered by the Indians, and WILLIAM WEST, his son, took up arms and headed a force which marched against Berkeley’s troops, but was captured. WILLIAM WEST escaped and evidently was afterwards pardoned. He married, first, REBECCA, daughter of ROBERT BRASWELL, the minister, but the wife mentioned in his will in 1708 was “MARTHA”. . . . When Bacon’s Castle was recaptured by Berkeley’s forces, WILLIAM WEST commanded a force that marched against the castle intending to surprise it but he in turn was surprised and captured by “80 horse and 90 foot” commanded by Colonel BRIDGER. WILLIAM was taken aboard a ship, thence to prison and was condemned to death by Berkeley’s court martial. He made his escape and was at large. Nearly one half of the inhabitants of Isle of Wight petitioned for his pardon. {Boddie, John B. “Southside Virginia Families”} HENRY WEST, JR. “A planter in Virginia”, in behalf of himself and his brother, WILLIAM, petitioned the King for pardon, stating that “WILLIAM WEST was seduced to accept a commission under the late rebel BACON against the Indians who had inhumanly murdered the petitioners parents about 30 {?} years since; both brothers surrendered themselves to Col. BRIDGER on promice of pardon, but were tryed by a Council of War, WILLIAM was sentenced to death and HENRY to be transported to England and to give bond to his Majesty to leave Virginia. He Prays for leave to return to his family in Virginia and pardon for his brother WILLIAM who had made his escape from Prison.” {Boddie., Ibid} RICHARD BRACEWELL was among the signers of this petition on behalf of his Brother-in-Law, WILLIAM WEST, “a rebel absconding who took up arms against the indians by whom his father had been most barbarously murdered, was taken prisoner and carried aboard ship, from hense to prson and was condemned to death, but made his escape and has not been found. We pray for his life and the restitution of his estate to his wife and children.” Following WILLIAM’s pardon, we next find him purchasing the original BRACEWELL Mill from REBECCA’s brother, RICHARD, along with the adjacent dam, pool, and two acres of land. JAMES BAGNALL, husband to their sister, ANN BRACEWELL BAGNALL, acknowledged this sale on the same date {August 9, 1681} which, it will be recalled, was later than the original purchase date since it was recorded in Nansemond County and the “records sence Burnt”. That the WESTs stayed in close proximity to REBECCA’s sister, JANE, and their brother, RICHARD, is evidenced by a series of deeds of land from the 1690’s from the Blackwater Swamp area in the Lower Parish of Isle of Wight County. As we will see in a later Document, WILLIAM WEST was a witness with RICHARD BRACEWELL to Blackwater deed from JAMES CORLEY to THOMAS KIRBY dated February 9, 1693/4. On April 28th following (1694), WILLIAM WEST, SR., and wife, REBECCA, for 2500 pounds of tobacco, sold ANTHONY HERRING of the Lower Parish 200 acres on the Blackwater (Swamp). The deed was witnessed by ROBERT WEST. March 30, 1696, WILLIAM WEST bought the remaining 300 acres adjoining “Mr. ROBERT BRASWELL’s mill to JAMES TULLAUGHs” from JAMES BAGNALL and his new wife, MARY. WILLIAM WEST was a man of such prominence that it would be tedious to repeat here all the documents bearing his name. but suffice to say that the name of his wife on deeds conveying dower rights changed from “Rebecca” to “Martha” Circa 1695, hence that estimate of her date of death. She left no will. Among the interesting documents that have survived was that Isle of Wight court record dated April 10, 1703, that stated, “In the differences between WILLIAM WEST and JOHN DRAKE, it appears that JOHN DRAKE has abused him. WILLIAM WEST, and his daughter, ANN WEST, and JOHN DRAKE has begged forgiveness.” Clearly WEST was not a man to be crossed! WILLIAM was receiving patents of Virginia land as late as 1705, when he acquired yet another 600 acres. An officer in 29th Regiment of Virginia Volunteers, War of 1812,even a Governor of Virginia, are among his distinguished descendants. WILLIAM WEST made his will in Isle of Wight County on October 20, 1708: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - In the Name of God Amen, the 20th day of October 1708 I Wm WEST of Newport Parish in the County of the Isle of Wight being sick & weak in body, but of sound & prfect memory, (praise be given to God for the same, & knowing the uncertainty of this life on earth, & being desirous to settle things in ordr doo make this my Last will & Testamt in manner, & forme following: That is to say, first & principally, I doo commend my soul to Almighty God my Creator assuredly beleiving that I shall receive full pardon, & free remision of all my sins, & be saved by the precious death, & merritts of my blessed saviour, & Redeemer Christ Jesus, & my body to the Earth, from whence it was taken, to be bured in such decent & Christian manner, as to my Exex hereafter named shall be thought meet & Convenient. Recall from previous Documents that RICHARD BRACEWELL was the youngest son of the Reverend ROBERT BRACEWELL (1611-1668), that he married SARAH VALENTINE(?) about 1672, and that he came of legal age before February 7, 1674--when he started selling off his Isle of Wight County inheritance. Recall also that RICHARD, ROBERT, Jr, and their sister JANE removed to Nansemond County in the 1670's and that all of that county's legal records were completely destroyed by fire in 1865. Finally, recall that JANE (STOKES ELY ROBERTS) accompanied our RICHARD when he returned to Isle of Wight County, this time to the southern (Upper Parish) part. They seated in the tobacco and turpentine-producing Beaver Dam Swamp community on Blackwater River which, as Cousin Jay Jones confirms, was located near present Franklin, Virginia. RICHARD's encore in these records was on February 9, 1694, when along with Brother-in-Law WILLIAM ("W") WEST, he witnessed JAMES and ELIZABETH CORLEY's assignment of their Blackwater patent to THOMAS KIRBY. RICHARD signed with his familiar reverse capital "R". Deed Book 1, 1688-1704, p. 103. RICHARD next buys a portion of GILES LINSCOTT's patent of 1311 acres on "ye Maine Blackwater" which LINSCOTT patented April 20, 1680.(Virginia Land Grants, Vol. 7, p. 20, Virginia State Library): - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Know all men by these presents that I HENRY BAKER & MARY my wife doe assigne over unto RICHARD BRACEWELL & to his Heires forever, all our right Tytle & interest to the within Conveyance & doe hereby bind ourselves, our heires Executors and administtrators for the true performance hereof, As witness our hands & seales this seaventh day of August 1697. Sorry, Carole! I have connections with all the surnames you list. I just recently discovered that my Robert Brasuell (Braswell) married Sarah M. James 30-AUG-1867 in Greene Co., AR. Sarah's father was Archibald B. James born about 1806 in TN. Sarah died at her brother's home in Combs, Madison Co., AR on 12-FEB-1909. This info was from her Civil War Widow's pension #752574 and Drop Order and Report #565010. Her brother was Andrew Jackson James, Sr. She had another brother in the 1850 named Joshua James, but after that I lost him. There were also two girls in that censu=Melissa and Catherine, but I think they were half-sisters by A. B.'s second wife, Anna (?) born in KY. The only Terry connection I know of , at this time, is a marriage between my great (grand?) Aunt Maggie Hardin to one Burl Terry in Comanche Co., TX. I am sorry, but I don't have much on the Terry family, yet. I reiterate what Carey said about all the good information you posted about our Arkansas families. Now, Carey, where have you been? Are you finally getting to work on that book? I know we are all waiting with bated breath for the results of your many years of researching our Bracewell/Braswell and etc. families. Next to you, I still feel like a novice. I guess I really am. I only started on my research in 1991, just six years ago. I really appreciated the extra info you gave about my 3rd great grandfather, William Braswell (1766-1856) and his brothers. It seems as if our family were pioneers in many areas. >From a the index of a set of books titled "Centennial History of Arkansas", I started looking for JAMES families, but of course, while I was there, I checked Braswell, etc. In Saline Co., AR, page 801 (Vol. unknown) I found the following: About 1827 Ezra M. Owen and a few of his neighbors laid off a town, which was given the name of Collegeville. Owen planned a school which he hoped to make the state university, hence the name. Collegeville failed to measure up to the expectations of its founders and it no longer appears on the map. Other early settlers in different parts of the county were:ROBERT AND VALENTINE BRAZIL, etc.(Some other names). Further down on this same page:The first county officers were:T. S. Hutchinson, judge Samuel Caldwell, clerk; VALENTINE BRAZIL, sheriff; A. Carrick, surveyor; Caleb Lindsey, coroner. I have more, MUCH more, but I will save it for another time. Carey, when you said, "I have done some Ouchita County County research insitu", you threw me for a short time. Then, I looked it up in my 1972 Webster's New World Dictionary and found it means "in its original position". Does that mean you were doing on-site research? ;-) Good to have you back. I haven't had anyone to pick on or to keep me straight. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! La Vera (Brasuell) Caruthers rjllc@juno.com Tomorrow, today will be yesterday. LLC From ???@???
